CHAPTER THREE

The Hay Ride

It was the night before Halloween. I was exhausted from all the jobs we had done. Next week, we started decorating client’s homes for Christmas and I knew we’d be busy until Thanksgiving. Before we met, mama and I would always just have a simple dinner for two at her trailer and Ricky said he ordered to go plates from the country diner where we always ate.

It was sad to think about, him all alone at the kitchen island eating his Thanksgiving dinner, while Johnny did whatever. Over the past few months I’d learned he was a very traditional guy when it came to meals. He loved having the company, someone to talk to about his day, tell his jokes to, someone to be his friend. Johnny never ate with him anymore and I knew deep inside that it hurt Ricky so much.

I smiled as I finished cooking dinner and reached in the cabinet for two plates. I caught him peeking around his newspaper at my body and smirked, “What?”

He smiled and shook his head, “Nothing, just looking at your tummy.”

I bit my bottom lip and turned to plate our pasta. He wanted spaghetti tonight. I always fixed it with a special sauce mama taught me how to make, it was thick and hearty; the perfect thing to warm us up on a chilly Autumn night.

Like a child before Christmas, I could feel a certain magic in the air. Grabbing our plates, I made my way to the kitchen island and took my seat next to Ricky. He folded his newspaper, setting it to the side as I slid his plate in front of him. “Thanks T,” he said with a gleam in his eye.

I replied cheerfully, “You’re welcome.”

We took a few bites and he commented, “God, I love the way you cook. I’m going to get as big as a house if you keep feeding me like this.”

I giggled. “Just more to love.”

He reached over and tousled my hair. “I love you kid.”

Silence lingered for a few moments as we continued eating and after a few minutes he said, “Oh, don’t get ready for bed yet. I have a surprise for you after we eat.”

I chirped, “Really?” and turned my attention to him.

“Yep.” He smiled. “You know there’s a harvest moon tonight?”

I smiled. “Sounds super romantic.”

He nodded. He knew how much I loved the night, even though most of the time I fell asleep early and didn’t get to enjoy it the way I used to. Still, I’d rather be curled up next to him than alone in that crappy trailer I used to live in, trying my damnedest to go back to sleep.

After dinner, Ricky slid out his barstool and patted his belly in satisfaction. “Man, that sure hit the spot.”

I removed his plate with mine and purred, “I’ve got a spot you can hit.”

He wiggled his eyebrows at me and leaned in. “I know where it is.”

I could feel the excitement rising in my jeans as I turned from him and set the plates in the sink.
